South Africa

This program area supports a vibrant, diverse and inclusive civil society in which nonprofits work to deepen democracy, increase participation in decisionmaking, advance socioeconomic and racial equality, and promote justice and reconciliation.

Funding priorities for Nonprofit Sector and Philanthropy

We seek an effective and well-managed nonprofit sector that is engaged with issues of poverty and inequality and is adequately resourced through private and public funding. We are making grants:

  • to nonprofit coalitions and networks involved with poor communities and grassroots organizations;
  • for training, capacity building, technical assistance and advocacy to strengthen nonprofits and ensure an enabling environment for the nonprofit sector; and
  • for philanthropic initiatives -- particularly community-based initiatives such as community foundations, women’s funds and indigenous forms of giving -- that are aimed at ensuring the long-term sustainability of the nonprofit sector.

Funding priorities for Rights, Responsibilities and Participation

We seek effective engagement of community residents in local government decisionmaking so people’s rights -- especially those of the poor, marginalized and vulnerable -- are upheld and advanced through local government service delivery. We are making grants:

  • to nonprofit and community-based organizations that facilitate and enhance participation in local government planning and decisionmaking; and
  • to networks, coalitions and organizations that provide funding, infrastructure support, capacity building and training to community-based advice offices and paralegals to ensure that people’s rights are protected and advanced.

Funding priorities for Race and Ethnic Relations

We seek a more inclusive, nonracial society in which communities are better able to address racism and transcend the divisions of the past. We are making grants:

  • to organizations that provide training, capacity building and advocacy to help people better understand racism and deal with the racial and ethnic conflicts and divisions of the past;
  • to community initiatives and projects aimed at promoting healing and reconciliation; and
  • for research and other activities aimed at combating racism and discrimination and promoting transitional justice.
