Special Initiatives

This program area allows us to respond to unique opportunities to advance environmental protection in the U.S. and internationally.

While strategic focus is important, we also need the ability to respond to unanticipated events and opportunities that lie outside the scope of our primary program areas. This program area gives us the flexibility to support non-governmental organizations’ work to respond to changing external circumstances.

Our funding is made under two objectives.

Priorities for Special Opportunities

On occasion, one-time and largely unanticipated opportunities arise for us to contribute to projects that address an important domestic or international environmental concern that lies outside the scope of our normal grantmaking priorities.

Due to budget constraints, funds typically are not allocated to this objective until specific projects are identified.

Priorities for Growth Management and Urban Revitalization in Michigan

Under this grantmaking objective we target growth management issues in Michigan. This topic is cross-program in nature and may involve our other three grantmaking programs.

We seek informed, committed and effective leaders and organizations at the local, regional and state levels that work for policies and programs to curb sprawl, promote urban reinvestment and improve community quality. We are making grants:

  • for research, technical assistance and training opportunities for nonprofit, community and local government leaders, with emphasis on the exchange of information, experience and best practices;
  • for innovative collaborations on specific growth management models and approaches at the multijurisdictional, regional and/or state level; and
  • for capacity-building and membership expansion activities for select nonprofit organizations.

The interest in growth management and urban revitalization is currently under review, and we anticipate a new grantmaking focus beginning in 2010.
