The project goal is to strengthen the community foundation field in the Czech Republic. During the grant period, the Czech Association of Community Foundations will improve its services for members, promote community foundations as vehicles for community development in the Czech Republic, support the development of new community foundations, and identify new sources of revenue for the association and its members. The association was established in September 2006 with the mission to develop the community foundation field in the Czech Republic, strengthen the capacity of its members, and represent Czech community foundations at the national and international levels. Currently, the association has eight members including five community foundations and three support organizations involved in providing services to community foundations and other grantmakers at the local level. In 2008-2009, the association provided information, consultations, and networking opportunities to its members.

The project goal is to strengthen the community foundation field in Slovakia. During the grant period, the Association of Slovak Community Foundations will strengthen its advocacy and representative role, improve its current services for members, promote community foundations as vehicles for community development in Slovakia, and increase its organizational capacity and financial sustainability. The association was established in 2003 with the mission to develop the community foundation field in Slovakia, strengthen the capacity of its members, and represent Slovak community foundations at national and international levels. Currently, the association has nine members that serve about 35 percent of the territory of Slovakia. In the past two years, the association developed a long-term organizational development strategy, provided learning and networking opportunities to its members, and increased the visibility of the Slovak community foundation field nationally and internationally.

The program goal is to build the capacity of informal groups, grassroots nonprofit organizations, and community enterprises in southern Romania to engage in the development of their communities. To this end, PACT - Partnership for Community Action and Transformation Foundation will provide training, field consultancy, small grants, and networking opportunities to grassroots organizations whose activities address the local needs of marginalized groups. In addition, the foundation will provide training and facilitation services to initiative groups in southern Romania interested in developing community foundations. The foundation will document and share its experience in community and social economy development nationally and internationally. In 2007-2009, the foundation strengthened the capacity of 32 community groups to develop and implement successful community projects, build coalitions, and mobilize local resources. Established in 2006, the foundation is based in Bucharest, Romania.

The Mott Foundation, through its
Civil Society program, provides grants to nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) working in four countries that joined the European Union (EU) in 2004 – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia – and two that joined in 2007, Bulgaria and Romania. These countries are commonly called, “
EU New Member States.”
