The project goal is to increase the participation of young refugees and displaced people in all aspects of decision making and social life in Serbia. To this end, Group 484 will promote the rights of forced migrants and engage young people in communities to work actively with young forced migrants. During 2010-2011, Group 484 will develop systematic volunteer opportunities for young people to work directly with vulnerable, minority communities and refugees and engage young people in advocacy for minority rights. In 2008-2009, Group 484 worked with universities in the cities of Belgrade, Nis, and Kragujevac to organize practical field-based work experience for students. Through various other projects, more than 500 trained volunteers provided direct assistance to vulnerable groups throughout Serbia. Group 484 also supported the development and implementation of the government's National Youth Strategy by monitoring and providing technical assistance to 11 resource centers across Serbia. Group 484 is based in Belgrade and cooperates with various European networks of organizations assisting refugees.

The project goal is to strengthen the capacity of Community Building Mitrovica-a nongovernmental organizational in Mitrovica, Kosovo-to lead and support economic, social, and civic redevelopment in the deeply divided city of Mitrovica. With a strong emphasis on the participation of people from all of the city's ethnic groups, Community Building Mitrovica works to bridge divisions by building economic, cultural, social, and political links across the community. In order to continue playing this important role, the organization will strengthen its capacities for civic leadership by improving management within the organization, developing the financial management and planning skills of core staff, establishing a governing board, and upgrading information technology systems. Based in the downtown Mitrovica, Community Building Mitrovica has been active since 2001 and is well recognized as a community leader.

Geographic Focus: Bosnia and Herzegovina

The project goal is to improve the quality and effectiveness of policy development and implementation in Bosnia-Herzegovina. To this end, the Centre for Socio-Economic Studies "Populari," a think tank established in late 2007, promotes informed debate on social, economic, and political developments through a variety of activities and analytical reports. During the grant period, the center will carry out field-based studies and assessments and stimulate discussion of policy issues through seminars, public presentations, and bilateral meetings. The center will focus on monitoring and promoting European Union integration and accession; the ownership and management of state property and how this complicates Bosnia-Herzegovina's state-building efforts; and working with young people in high schools and colleges to stimulate critical thinking about the country's future. In 2008-2010, the center produced important reports as well as a documentary film based on solid, field-based research and covering such timely issues as the country's progress toward European Union accession and its inclusion in the European Union's visa-free regime.
